How often do we say we wish we had the time to be more creative?  I know for my team this is something that we say everyday.  We are often so busy with the doing of design that we can’t get to the being of design.  This video shows the power of time to enable us to think new and creative thoughts.  We all need time to be creative.  Creative is not just about creating a piece of art, it is also thinking creatively about any problem we have.  These problems can be as simple as what do I want to prepare for dinner, or as complex as how do I solve our companies production issues?

To be a deviant thinker, we need time to think.   Ideas are not created quickly, as you can see from this video, from Cafe Communications.  When forced to come up with answers quickly we often go for the most obvious answer.  This answer is the “one” that almost everyone can come up with.

How do you come up with deviant thoughts?

What are things that we can do to open time to be a deviant thinker?  How can we be wholly there when creating?

calendar

1) Clean up your calendar.

Take the time to remove unnecessary tasks from your day.  Stop doing the things you “should do”.  If it isn’t serving you, don’t do it.  If it is serving you do it and see it as a choice.  This will clear your mind and allow you to be more in the moment.

2) Schedule time

Your calendar represents what matters most to you.  If you want the time to think deviant thoughts you need to schedule it.  Don’t just hope the time will come for you.

3) Be fearless

“Because of their courage, their lack of fear, they (creative people) are willing to make silly mistakes. The truly creative person is one who can think crazy; such a person knows full well that many of his great ideas will prove to be worthless. The creative person is flexible; he is able to change as the situation changes, to break habits, to face indecision and changes in conditions without undue stress. He is not threatened by the unexpected as rigid, inflexible people are.” — Frank Goble

When looking for these deviant thoughts don’t edit yourself.  Be fearless in your thoughts and confident that you will be wrong, but you will be right as well.
