listen to you

What do I mean by Cultural Public Relations? It is all the crap that “they” tell you.

• You need to be a productive citizen of the world.

• Going to college will get you a good job.

• Get yourself a nice job with a good corporation.

• Buy a house with a white picket fence and a dog.

These are paid advertisements that are selling you on what you should think is “right”.

How many of these exist in our life?

Do you think drinking another animal milk that is meant to help a baby animal grow up to a big honking heifer keeps you healthy? No, but that is what the American Dairy Council has sold you as right for you body.  ( Don’t get me wrong, I love a milk shake as much as the next guy, I just try not to believe “that it does the body good.”)

So who is selling you on what is right for your mind? The status quo, the companies we work for, the schools we attend, the friends we hang out with. “They” all have a message for us.

What if “they” are wrong?

What if “they” just don’t want you to be different from them?

What if “they” don’t want you to do what “they” always dreamed of doing but were too darn afraid to do?

What would happen if you didn’t listen to “they”?

What would happen if you listened to you?

What would happen if our cultural PR said different things?

Things like:

• Take a risk!

• Never been done before? That is awesome!

• Use what is unique about you to make the world a better place.

• Conformity is bad; individuality is good.

• Let’s all not agree, and everybody try something that they think will work.

Would it be a different world?  What could we accomplish if our cultural PR encouraged us be different instead of all the same?

Tell me about what you could tell yourself?
